This is a large, antique french gold-work embroidered altar canopy in silk, with plenty of beautiful gold thread embroidery, gold vestment trim and gold bullion trim. Teh base fabric is white silk.
This has lots fo little antique darns, and quite a few splits in the silk, see photos. It is edged with wide gold metal vestment trim, with a deep band of bright gold bullino trim. The central motif is a sacred heart in padded raised work on a blue silk shield, mounted on a glass-jewelled burgundy velvet circle. Underneath, there is a beautiful half-circlet of raised goldwork laurel leaves. The left corner has a cross, and the right, an anchor. There are 4 panels with cross motifs on blue silk, mounted on deep burgundy velvet with raised gold spot dtail. It is backed with saffron cotton, and has a row of little brass rings sewn to the back to hang it.
Please study the photos ot see the extent of the darns and splits in the silk, these are commensurate with age and use. Apart from that, there is very little wrong with the canopy, hte cross needs a stitch or 2 to secure an outlining gold thread that has come loose, the lining is a bit worn, everything else seems sound.
It measures 95/2.41m long, by 35.5/88cms at each end, with 2/6.5cm bulliion trim. It weighs about 1.3kg. A low reserve reflects the quality of this beautfiul textile. Thank you for looking.
