Rare 19C Italian Santos Niche Shrine Glass Eyes Monk NreW are pleased to offer this rare 19th century italian processional santos shrine. The shrine is absolutely stunning, constructed of gilt and gessoed wood. The santos (monk) inside is constructed of wire, straw, and wood, with painted gesso hands and head. hTe eyes are glass. There is a stikc connected to him, which runs through a hole in the bottom of the shrine. I am told these were carried in processions. I am not familiar with this particular saint, but i am sure someone will be able to provide more information. The santos is in very good condition. Dose have some chipped fingers. He measures 11 1/2 high x 5 wide x 2 1/2 deep. The shrine is in excellent condition, and measures 20 high x 8 wide x 4 deep. See our other auctions for more from thsi great birmingham estate! We.
